Goddammit! Finally!

So a full month of sketches. I did this at the behest of Sean  who said ‘draw something special for it. like the punisher!’

Say what you will but Frank Castle holds a special place in my heart as far as comicdom goes. The Punisher Movie Adaptation was one of the first comics I ever got. Not the 2004 ‘I just want my kids back’ version. This was the 1988 Dolph Lundgren/Lou Gossett Jr. Punisher with Frank vs. The Yakuza. Yeah the movie was shit, but the comic was awesome. One that got me into comics that weren’t just merchandising tie-ins!

Apparently there’s another Punisher in the works. Some Irish guy is playing him.  Can’t say how that will go (i gotta say though, even though they retconned him being Italian, I dunno, Frank always struck me as being a lot more Hardcore NY Irish, what with the grudges & all). In this new one, they’ve got McNulty as Jigsaw, & Wayne Knight as Microchip? Awesome! I gotta say though. Over the years? There have been a lot of missed casting opportunities when it comes to Frank himself. Sure he’s essentially just a comic version of Bronson in Death Wish, but still. Elias Koteas? Tommy Flanagan? Hell, DeNiro? Keitel? In the 80’s? Shooting crack dealers? From Fire Escapes? Greatness right there! But I’m talking more movies than comics.

Right. So the sketch itself’s a little late. Photobucket would keep trying to load this but it’d just sit at 0% & not move during the upload. I ended up going through & cleaning up my photobucket account. Eventually it seemed to work. But then I started ranting about the Punisher, making it all the later. Anyway, yeah. I got a full month of sketches under my belt. yay.

One more day as a videographer. I gotta go cover a press conference for funds being allocated for a road being fixed up. But apparently everything’s going to be ice tomorrow morning. Fun stuff.

From like one of the first posts on here, a character I created over the summer. He just happens to have a boombox for a head. It’s not his fault. It’s a rare genetic condition. But his foul temper & eagerness to fight? Those he can control, but often chooses not to.  Hey it’s tough growing up with a stereo for a face.

Literally done in 15 minutes.

LONG DAY. and the foreseeable future looks irritating with the shit I’ve gotta do. Mostly because I haven’t had the time to sit & chill & work on my stuff the past few days, other than a random sketch here or there.

Gestural Drawings for an upcoming project. Ever see a chick in a mech pilot suit AND animal pelts before? Nothing special but just doodling ideas while at work & i figured i’d post it here. You may or may not get a sense of what’s going on here. but hopefully not. haha

it’s weird using other people’s scanners. this one makes a loud grinding noise as it’s scanning. thought it was gonna spit out sawdust.

anyway, i’ve been keeping the daily thing pretty clockwork so far this year. i’d like to keep going but shit’s getting weird for me schedule wise. who knows the way this week is shaping up. i gotta get to work around 8am tomorrow. usually it’s around noon. but then i gotta go find some place about 20 minutes away that I think I’ve been to once but only while being terribly lost. Like I said. Who knows how this will go…

Maggotbrain (Character Idea #22,389,943; if you’re keeping track)

I found an old sketch that I fleshed out a little more this morning while I was waiting on breakfast at a diner. Nothing special. It was from the first ‘Dominance War‘ which is a big showdown between the big game art forums online. The first one, people were asked to design a ‘general’. I wanted to go with a sort of warlord / messiah / moses / george clinton / bambaataa / soulsonic force / rammelzee lil bit sort of guy. wearing sun medallions, scarves, & respirators around his neck, carrying a stick that fired essentially a cannon blast. but then I remembered ‘hey wait… that’s just like george clinton in the california love video.’ and felt a lot less creative. Anyway, I was thinking he lead a roving militia where each member was named after a different P-Funk song. Nothing resulted though.

I think there’s another dominance war going on now or soon or something. I don’t really feel all that interested. That having been said, I’ll probably wanna do something after seeing the usually kick ass end results.

I dunno about you. But I love P-Funk. It makes me wanna… wanna…

anyway. back to comics.

look. i read up on zuda. it didn’t really pique my interest. then it started, & aside from maybe one entry each time, i don’t like what’s posted. and THEN you read the user comments. yeah. it’s not my scene.

That having been said, Sheldon Vella’s Supertron is up on there for voting. I like it. Do think it works better in Popgun though. But I do think he draws well. And If he wins, he pledges to donate the entirety of the first paycheck to entervoid. That seems like a worthy enough cause to plug him. But also… JUSTICE, as the comic that’s winning isn’t that good. At least that’s what I’ve heard. Frankly I can’t get Zuda to work on my laptop & its dial up connection. Them & their stupid ass flash reader.

so i’d tell you to just vote but the rest of the entries don’t stack up as well as this one does. so chances are, that’s probably how you were going to vote anyway! Cause you people are awesome!

Fence offered to draw Slaughterface, so I offered to draw one of her characters. She wanted Finnegan, her void fighter with rock/paper/scissor based powers. This reminded me of a conversation I had just recently had with Sean about the way (Younger) Pete Wrigley plays rock paper scissors, so it lead to this. Finnegan Vs Pete! With a special cameo by Artie, The Strongest Man. In the World.

Also? The Adventures of Pete & Pete is the litmus test of ‘good people’. If people don’t like pete & pete, they’re not good people. I mean obviously not everyone’s seen it. International audiences, for instance. But if you watch this show & don’t like it? Pfffft.

These were just quick sketches is all. thor & bill are marvel. valhallen’s hanna barbera. i forgot how thor’s cape actually worked so i gave him an actual viking sort of wrap thing.

Computers at work sucked hard today. Drove an hour down there, sat around for an hour & half, then i go to do what i need to do & it isn’t happening. so an hour home & 3/4 of a pizza later, here i am. i’m working on some scripting layout stuff. i’m working on some stuff i might pass out at conventions or just post here on the old i-web.

remember when i mentioned the panel tag thing yesterday? yeah. alright well i’m going to preface this with… you’re not going to understand what’s going on as you’re probably just joining & the story’s 50+ pages on. but Elio, who’s an awesome artist, started a panel tag back before the holidays on the void forum featuring King Oslaf. It started out pretty fun but then someone gave him boobs & everyone seemed to lose interest or something, all before it came to my turn. so here. i solve the boob conundrum by introducing liberal amounts of guns, surgery, & brian dennehy! the time travel was already sort of there to work with.

Old Joke, but since I threatened to do sequentials for daily sketches, here we are. I like coy magneto & dickish xavier. though, I know that’s not what was intended when Jack, Stan, & Marvel created them (hahah see how I work a segway, yeah. not my characters. duh). I don’t know which exact X-Men canon subscribes to the helmet blocking telepathy. It’s probably only the movie, in which, fuck me. But if you REALLY, REALLY care that much? Fuck you! You’re ruining comics, the world, & America!

Sorry if it’s TOO light. I did it on a pretty contrasty monitor.

Mind you, the original sketch was this. everything else was photoshop. Not that there was very much added or they’re moving around in a very dynamic manner.

By the way, I do find a little sick nerd-joy in the fact that the “Fastball Special” has it’s own Wikipedia entry. Is that wrong? Why am I even asking? Of course it is. But still. It has one.

Aside from this, I’ve been doing sketches for sean’s deal, FD, but understandably, he wants them all to himself first. I also owe the incredibly awesome fence half of an art trade.  And I have a panel tag thing going on from the Void Forum soon, twice over.  Along with my own projects which I’m kind of psyched about right now but really haven’t done too too much of yet because I keep getting distracted among a bunch of other non-project related bullshit. like car shopping & things. Cuz I suck.

Karate Frankenstein! My character Daigoro. Sean thinks he looks like the old hanna barbera frankenstein. but he’s supposed to be a lil’ bit more yakuza/punk rock/prison escapee/akuma! regardless, he’s fun to draw. i did this at work while waiting on shit to NOT fuck up… but it kept fucking up anyway.

Akita Khruschev!

A dog character that pops up in a project I have in the works. It’s supposed to be like an older Akita puppy. I drew it because, while I did have a dog character in a different thing back in the day, it’s been years since I’ve tried one & the first where I actually tried to nail down a specific breed. I think I drew the torso too long & the front legs too thin or not fluffy enough. and the weight doesn’t look right. that’s just from not being used to dog anatomy though. I dunno.

Trying to get back into the proper habit of drawing things I don’t draw often, no matter how uninteresting or unexciting they may be!

And I think I have a Cloverfield headache. I got too used to the shakey-shake & then had to readjust to the lack of shakey & just… ech. I’m not complaining about the shaking, mind you. As a sometimes cameraman, that’s not a huge deal. Problem is it was shakey & more times than not, just out of focus. People blame the shaking but I think it was largely the focus. good movie though for the most part, which is saying something because i hate abrams. shit got fucked up! fucked up well! and one nagging detail aside, the monster actually looked pretty cool. Totally made me want a giant robot movie though. Like Evangelion! or something…

Mend the ties with the WGA & get on that shit, Hollywood! Or fuck them… show us what you got, Bollywood!

RoboCrashLand

(Sorry. I was trying this out on a new scanner. And then when I finally did get it to work, I got a little distracted & it’s not going up until 4 hours after the fact. I suck I know)

This character pilots a mech robot that fights in space. But she just crash landed on a strange desolate planet of mostly ice & radioactive ash. And that’s where the story begins. She’s from a project I’ve been working. Still working on the details of the suit (& a name). but the face & hair’s pretty set in my mind. This drawing took about 45 minutes all together Mostly in the face & hair.

One of the Best Character Designs Ever

How could you possibly argue? You can’t. Yoko from Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann, a product of Gainax. I spent more time coloring than I did on the actual pencils. and i didn’t have a proper reference for the actual design, rather than watching & looking up every couple of seconds. ok so i didn’t do it proper justice. oh wells. Not included: her 7ft long sniper rifle! It’s a good show, about robots, & drilling, & you should really watch it.

Not as sick as I was, but still not 100%.  not too sick to draw though. I’m working on some layout stuff right now. hopefully more to post soon!

Royal Trucks! (And Truckers)

I copped out & drew a super quickie of the samurai trucker I mentioned yesterday (though there’s hardly any samurai elements in this). Not much thought applied to this. And I’ll get back to drawing things I should practice once I’m feeling better.

There’s a Reason I’ve Never Drawn A Semi Before.

Yeah. trying to keep with the trend of drawing things i haven’t drawn often… or ever. like here’s a semi:

It’s from an old idea I had about samurai truckers. But what’s a samurai trucker story without trucks? Needless to say that project never went anywhere. but no one can say i never tried drawing a truck now. As a bonus, here’s a sketch I started a few weeks back. When I couldn’t keep working on Laundromat, I was hoping on maybe doing a quick couple of pages of a different story. Kids… a four wheeled mech thing… on the run… It was a seriously half assed idea & it’s scrapped! but this chick was the start. seemed to come out pretty well I think. so here. now it’s not going to waste:

Right. So When I Started the Daily Sketches, I swore that I was going to try & do things different. Backgrounds, Sequentials, etc. Well here! It’s not a character w/o a background. that having been said, it was real light & it didn’t scan so well. I spent about an hour on it, not straight. That guy’s just some guy. and he’s supposed to be standing on a neon sign. the window next to him were supposed to be floor to ceiling, he’s not a dwarf or anything. i gotta practice more with these. and then sort of ‘ink’ over with the pencil again so they’re not so scratchy & scummy when i try to boost the contrast

that & i think my url looks bad ass in the ‘godzilla’ font.

also? what’s been the deal with turner classic movies lately? i think they have some sort of conspiracy to throw me seriously off my sleep schedule or something. friday night it was death race 2000 & rollerball. last night? tokyo (fuckin’!) drifter & day of the jackal back to back until 6am. gee. thanks!
